Laboratory Created
Color Change Sapphire Solitaire Ring

Recently a customer from one of our Jewelry Store Clients submitted a color change gemstone to determine the species and variety of the gemstone, and to determine if it is natural or lab created.

It had been passed down to her from her Grandmother. Her Grandmother brought it with her as one of her prized possessions when she emigrated to the USA.

Gemological testing was completed using advanced instruments and observation at 10X through a Stereo Zoom Microscope with darkfield illumination. it was determined that the (almost 15ct.) color change gemstone was a laboratory created color change sapphire. Internal laboratory created flame fusion characteristics are present, including curved striae, with a Refractive index testi results of 1.76 to 1.77.

This gemstone type was first created in 1895 by the Russians, with the then current technology. By the time of the depression of the 1930's it was one of the most popular "Gemstones" in the world. There was little acknowledgement at the time that this gemstone was lab created. At the time it was inexpensive and and highly sought after for its beauty. That was the only important factor for the consumer at the time.

To capture the image that you see above we photograph color change gemstones under two different light sources. The blue color was photographed under 6000K daylight; the reddish purple color was photographed under 2000K incandescent light.

If you have any questions about color change gemstones or how  to submit items for an appraisal just ask!
